PART 1: THE IMPORTANCE OF DETAILS

As your wedding photographer, it is so important to me that I create a Wedding Experience for you and your soon-to-be spouse that you will love and cherish for many years to come. One big part of that experience is being involved in creating your wedding day timeline.

Your wedding day timeline is a great tool to see how every single part of your wedding day falls into place, to make your wedding day come together as a whole. Taking the time to set your timeline beforehand ensures that all you need to do on your wedding day is follow the timeline we put together. This means, that ON your wedding day, you get to relax and be stress-free and actually ENJOY your wedding day – the day you marry your best friend and begin your love story together!

This blog post is the first in a series that will walk you through all of the phases of your wedding day. Often times your day begins with getting hair and make-up done at your getting ready location. I’ll usually arrive towards the end of your appointment (because no one likes pictures without hair and make up at least partially done!) and one of the first things I will do on the day of your wedding is get to work photographing all of your details. So naturally, the first stop in this blog series of creating your wedding day timeline will be all about photographing details.

Details are some of my favorite photographs throughout the wedding day. By photographing details first, it allows me to take some time to get in the “wedding mood” and get those creative juices flowing.

Details deserve to be captured.

These details can include your grandmother’s brooch you decided to have as your “Something Old” or your birdcage veil that your mother wore on her wedding day, or maybe your shoes are the shoes you have dreamed of wearing since you were little.

Your details tell a story that is special to you and they will forever set the scene for the story of your wedding day.

Here are a few things to remember as you approach your wedding day.

01. GATHER THE GOODS.

Collect all of your details before I arrive so that I can begin photographing your details quickly. Please make sure your details are in one area so we don’t waste time searching for missing items or worse, items don’t get photographed at all!

02. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THREE RINGS.

Yes, I said all three! This includes, your engagement ring, your wedding band and the groom’s wedding band. This is the most common detail that is missing when I arrive because people will tell you to hand over your wedding band to the best man before the day begins. However, it’s actually better to hand them over during the bridal party portraits so that I can get some great ring shots at the same time I am photographing other details.

03. INCLUDE A COPY OF YOUR INVITATION SUITE

This is another commonly missed detail. Bringing your full invitation suite just adds that extra layer of details to your wedding day and was an important part of your planning process so why not photograph it! Plus, paper goods are so beautiful!

04. EXTRA ELEMENTS

Sometimes, depending on the theme & “look” of your wedding day, there may be some extra elements that you could include when you gather your details. For example, if you are having a rustic wedding, you could include a piece of burlap or lace. If you are having a wedding that includes some wooden elements, maybe save a small piece of wood for me to use when I’m shooting your rings and jewelry. This really makes for beautiful, consistent album spreads!

05. HAVE YOUR BOUQUET DELIVERED TO YOUR GETTING READY ROOM

Most often, the bouquet is delivered to your ceremony site which means that all of those pretty detail shots that include flowers will need to be taken during bridal party portraits (cutting down on portrait time). Having your bouquet delivered to your getting ready room means that I can include your gorgeous flowers as part of your “extra elements” and I can also be sure to include photographs of your gorgeous bouquet by itself.

06. LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY ITEMS OF SIGNIFICANCE

This part is extremely important because if I KNOW that an item has special meaning to you, then I can spend a little more time photographing it. I want to hear the stories behind why you chose a specific detail!

The bride below wore her groom’s late mother’s Mikimoto pearls on their wedding day. Trust me, this had me feeling all the feels!
